Weekend Theme: The Better Way- Lessons on Prayer from a Recovering Martha
Many people have portions of scripture that they find difficult to understand – verses that don’t make sense and passages that cause them to ask questions. I can’t remember when Luke 10:41-42 began to bother me, but I believe it started in my early teens.
Just two little verses at the end of Luke’s account of Jesus’ visit to the house of two sisters! Only a few words that have simply dogged me! Two verses written in red in my Bible because they are Jesus’ words!
He tells Martha, (who by every description sounds like a wonderful woman), ‘Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things but few things are needed – or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her’.
As a woman who identifies heavily with Martha I feel like I have spent my whole life trying to understand that Better Way. Jesus has been my faithful teacher even when I’ve been an unwilling student.
Twenty-five years ago my choice for the theme of this weekend would have been: The Better Way – Why Martha Gets a Bad Rap and Mary Is Just So Annoying! But, now, I can see where Jesus has taught me what it means to spend time with the Divine, to be comfortable with stillness and to delight in dwelling.
I invite you to join me on this often uncomfortable, surprisingly hysterical and wildly challenging adventure of prayer. It’s going to be a great weekend together!
2016 Retreat Insights …
This is a time of rest and renewal with my walk with God. Kahquah provides a beautiful setting for that! The music, speakers, sharing and fellowship all have been a blessing!
This was my first trip to Camp Kahquah. Having come in a small group of two, not knowing anyone other than my companion and not being sure of what to expect, I was delighted to find that the women’s retreat had been saturated in prayer. It was that evident. I came wanting to hear from God…..and that is what happened.
It was a wonderful time of spiritual refreshment and refocusing, as well as a great time of rest and (re)connection with many lovely ladies. Camp Kahquah is an amazing place where God’s presence and peace is palpable. Thank you for providing the opportunity for all of us to come, learn, grow and enjoy all that God had for us!
